International Entrepreneurial Camps

Page Thanks to eager international students and teachers at Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences the YES-center in Eastern Uusimaa has had the privilege to encounter with students from all over the world. Three young men, Haroon Afzali, Kayode Ogunboye and Olalekan Ogunbuwale, have done an enourmous amount of good work to realize two entrepreneurial JA-YE Camps in Porvoo.

They have had great help from their teachers Sirpa Lassila, Ger Yucel and Evariste Habiyakare. It all started from a presentation I was giving the personell of Haaga-Helia on JA-YE programmes on Svenska Dagen, October 6th 2009. Not long after that Sirpa Lassila and Ger Yucel showed up at the YES -center saying they had international students who were interested in learning the Junior Achievement Young Enterprise 24 hour Camp model and realizing a camp or two in Porvoo in the spring.

The first Innovation Camp was a full 24 hour camp, a trial to be evaluated.
The goal for the camp was to raise the interest of the campers towards the camp model and to have them become so inspired that they would carry out a second camp as camp leaders. The first camp had 4 camp leaders and 16 campers.

The first camp was held from 9th to 10th of April. It was a success and the campers presented very interesting business ideas at the end of the camp. Everybody was happy, but also extremely tired after the 24 hour effort. The goals of the first camp was achieved. A second camp was to be held a month later - now with 16 camp leaders!

The feedback and outcome of the first camp was to evaluate the camp program and to shorten the time to half and leave the best control points for the second camp. More time was given to the making of the business plan without forgetting some of the points where team spirit is built up. The second camp interested over twenty students but after all gathered 13 campers of ten different nationality. There was also a mix of students: international Haaga-Helia students, university level exchange students and two international business collage students. The feedback has it that the business ideas of the second camp teams were even better than those of the first camp.
